Students' Competition - A call to Secondary School, College and University Students to Participate in a Logo Drawing Competition

The Ministry of Justice, National Cohesion and Constitutional Affairs (MoJNCCA) with support from the European Union (ninth European Development Fund) is implementing a Programme known as Non State Actors Support Programme: NSA-NET.

The NSA-NET is a democratic governance programme and specifically seeks to strengthen mechanisms, networks and capacity for deepening and broadening the participation of Non State Actors (NSAs) in development processes.

The NSAs funded through the NSA-NET Programme include non-governmental organizations (NGOs), civil society organizations (CSOs), and cultural actors. The NSAs are supported to implement diverse governance initiatives across the country.

The areas of focus include: youth, women and community empowerment and participation; participation of Kenyans with disability in governance and development issues; promotion of national cohesion; improving access to justice; enhancing accountability and protection of human rights; use of art and cultural actors in promoting good governance, and reflection and action on issues of ethnicity and national identity.

The Programme intends to develop an appropriate "LOGO" that it will use in all its official documents. To promote participation of Kenyan youth and to provide them with an opportunity to innovatively translate their ideas of good governance into art, the Programme is launching a competition among students under the following rules:

Rules of Competition:
  1. The participants are invited to create an original LOGO. In doing so, the participants should be guided by the theme: "NSAs can achieve better results of promoting good governance if they network (or work together) with a common purpose".
  2. The drawing must be produced on one side of a plain A4 size sheet.
  3. The participant must indicate in the back of the sheet the following details (Full names, address and telephone contact; name and address of School/College/University being attended; Class or year of study).
  4. A jury composed of a team drawn from the NSA-NET Programme Management and Facilitation Unit (PMFU), European Union and selected funded NSAs will select 3 winners from among Secondary Schools' participants and 3 from among College/ University participants.
  5. Prizes of Kshs. 25,000, Kshs. 30,000 and Kshs. 40,000 will be offered respectively to the third, runners-up and winner of the secondary schools participants.
  6. Prizes of Kshs. 35,000, Kshs. 40,000 and Kshs. 50,000 will be offered respectively to the third, runners-up and winner of the College/University participants.
  7. All prizes will be made as follows: Kshs. 10,000 will be paid directly to each winner and the balance in form of fees/tuition payments in account of the winner to their respective institutions.
  8. Any of the winning drawings will be used to develop the NSA-NET Programme Logo.
  9. The participants understand that the copyright of all the submitted drawings will be retained by the NSA-NET Support Programme. The participants not have right of return.
  10. The NSA-NET Support Programme cannot be held responsible for force majeure, should the competition have to be modified or cancelled.
  11. Submission of an entry assumes the acceptance of all competition conditions by the participants. No appeal on the organization or on the results of the competition will be accepted. The decision of the jury will be final.
The deadline for receipt of the drawings is 4.00 PM on Tuesday 26th April 2011. Entries should be submitted in an envelope marked "NSA-NET LOGO Competition" to;

HADAF Somalia Cartoon Competition

The Associations of East African Cartoonists (KATUNI) invites cartoonists to participate in the HADAF Somalia Cartoon Competition

Prizes: 1st $3000, 2nd $1,500, 3rd $750

Competition rule:
  • Theme: Search For Peace In Somalia; Achievements and Challenges
  • The maximum number of entries you may submit is 5.
  • All entries should be without any kind of frame and must not be folded
  • Each entry must be accompanied by a short biography and/or CV as well as the name and contact details of the cartoonist.
  • Submitted works may be put on exhibition and used in future publications.
  • The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence shall be entered into it.
  • Submitted works will not be returned.
  • By participating, you grant the organizers the rights to publish and use the submitted
  1. Reproduction and dissemination in printed form for all editions (e.g. study edition, school edition, special edition) and in unlimited print-runs (printing right). The printing right embraces in particular hard-cover editions, paperback editions, reprints, magazines, newspapers, collected works, via all distribution channels such as retail bookshops, other retailers selling books, book clubs, open and closed user groups and in all formats.
  2. Electronic/digital storage and making accessible (including in databases) by means of digital or other storage or data transmission technology, with or without intermediate storage, in such a way that users have access from a place and at a time selected individually by them and can download, play back, interactively use and/or pass to third parties this work via PC, eBook, mobile telephone or other wired or wireless appliances, for example via the internet, UMTS, cable, satellite or other transmission paths (online right).

Digital copies of the cartoons may be sent to katuni@gmail.com and be in JPEG format with a resolution of at least 300 dpi.

Original artworks or clear prints (no photocopies) should be placed in an envelope marked “Hadaf Somali Cartoon Competition” and either sent to:

The Canadian Organization for Development through Education (CODE) in collaboration with the National Book Development Council of Kenya (NBDCK) and with the generous support of a Canadian patron, Mr. Bill Burt, have the pleasure to invite Kenyan authors to take part in a writing competition to produce engaging and educational stories for the youth (12 – 18 years old) which will be published as part of the Burt Award for African Literature.

Objectives of the Award
  • To support and motivate the development of supplementary reading materials for a critical stage of learning – the transition period between mother tongue and the English medium of instruction in both primary and secondary schools.
  • To publish stories which strengthen the English language skills of the youth and help foster enthusiasm and a love for reading.
  • To stimulate and support the African publishing industry and contribute to the literary wealth of African literature.
  • To increase the stock of English reading materials in school and community libraries.
  • To recognize excellence in literature for youth.
Criteria for the Award’s Writing Competition

The story should:
  • Be written in English.
  • Demonstrate a solid command of English through a clear cohesive language and proper sentence structure, vocabulary and punctuation.
  • Be thought-provoking and original: It should have an excellent story telling style e.g. strong imagery, lively dialogue, and vivid description to arouse young readers’ interest and curiosity and keep them turning pages.
  • Be prose fiction containing content and language appropriate for ages 12-18 years old.
  • Have a strong literary merit including;
  1. Engaging characters with whom young readers can identify and a protagonist who overcomes challenges or obstacles in a positive way.
  2. A well-developed plot with a good flow of events.
  3. The effective use of literary devices, such as flashbacks.
  • The story should reflect current issues and challenges of concern to contemporary Kenya.
  • Submissions which shall have the potential to evolve into a book series or sequel are welcome.
Manuscript Submission Guide
  1. The length of the manuscript should be between 120 – 150 pages.
  2. The manuscript should be in chapter form.
  3. They should be type-written in double space.
  4. The font type should be Times New Roman, font size 12.
The Awards
  • 1st Prize - CAD$ 12,000
  • 2nd Prize - CAD$ 6,000
  • 3rd Prize - CAD$ 3,000
Deadline for Submission

All manuscripts, which must be in soft copy, should be submitted to: info@nationalbookcouncilkenya.org by Friday 30th September 2011 at 12.00 noon.

The manuscripts will be assessed by a panel of qualified jurors based on the criteria set herein.

The winners together with the date and venue for the award ceremony will be made known through the media.

HelpAge Kenya National Schools’ Essay and Art Competition 2010

National programme for promotion of rights and entitlements for older persons infected and affected by HIV and AIDS (NACC/TOWA III)
National Schools’ Essay and Art Competition 2010
Background
The United Nations and member countries including Kenya is this year (2010) celebrating the 20th anniversary of the International Day for Older Persons, (In 1991, UN designated the 1st of October as the International Day for Older Persons).
The theme for the year is “Older Persons and the Achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
HelpAge Kenya, a national NGO championing for the rights of Older Persons has teamed up with the National Aids Control Council to implement a national programme for promotion of rights and entitlement of infected and affected Older Persons in Kenya funded under TOWA III.
The project is intended to inform, educate and involve children, youth and the general public on being responsive to issues and needs of Older Persons while bearing in mind the following facts:
  • Older Persons are entitled to equal protection and entitlements under International Human Rights and Humanitarian Laws
  • Evidence derived from the Kenya Aids Indicator Survey (KAIS, 2007), indicates that Older persons are also at risk of HIV infection yet they lack vital and accurate preventive messages and services.
  • Older Persons comprise 50% of carers of orphans, vulnerable children and bedridden AIDS patients.
  • Older Persons are vulnerable and easy target for rape, sexual abuse, stigma, discrimination and other forms of Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) and consequentially susceptible to HIV infection.
  • Female Older Persons comprise the bulk of widows who in most cases are whereby they are unable to access justice in case of disputes over land and property inheritance.
Art/Essay Competition Questions/Task:
I. For Secondary Schools’ entrants, the Essay/Art Topic is:
“Write an Essay (750-1000 words) and/or draw a picture describing the problems that infected and affected Older Persons encounter and suggest practical ways in which families, society and the government can promote their rights to HIV prevention”.
II. For Primary Schools’ Entrants, the Essay/Art Topic is; “Write an Essay (250—300 words) or draw a picture that explains how Older Persons are affected by HIV and AIDS”.
Eligibility Criteria and Entry Divisions
  • Upper Primary School: Standard 4 to 7
  • Secondary School: Form 1 to 3
Rules
  • The competition is open to all students within the categories (divisions stated).
  • Entries must be original and relevant to the theme-
  • Essays may not exceed 1000 words for secondary school entrants and 300 words for primary school entrants.
  • Entries that have won awards/prize in other competitions will be disqualified
  • Once submitted, no entries will be returned to the entrants.
  • Essays will be judged on content, originality and how the topic is conveyed to readers.
  • The decision of the judges will be final.
Deadline for Submission: 15th November 2010
Announcement of Winners: Names of the winners will be published in the Daily Nation on the 4th week of November 2010

  • Trophies and Back to school vouchers worthy 10,000/=, 8,000/= and 6,000/- to students with winning entries in 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions.
  • Books and Reference Material on Ageing and Older Persons worthy 10,000/=, 8,000/= and 6,000/= respectively for schools with winning entries in 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions.
Winners Gala Ceremony
The winners will be awarded the prizes/awards on Wednesday, 1st December 2010 – World AIDS Day.

Evans Wadongo, a 24 year old Kenyan, used part of his student loan, and even skipped meals to set up the ‘Use Solar, Save Lives’ program through which his organization, SDFA-Kenya, designs, makes, and distributes solar lanterns to poor communities, AND helps the communities to set up small economic ventures from the money initially spent on kerosene.

Evans has been selected as a CNN Top Ten Hero due to his work. Voting is now online for him to win the prestigious CNN hero of the year.
