Job Summary

UNDP Kenya Sign Language Interpreters Consultants Jobs in Kenya

Background

UNDP Kenya and Development Partners established a Civil Society Democratic Governance (CSDG) Facility, under the UNDP Country Programme Action Plan, known as Amkeni Wakenya.

This Facility, under the Democratic Governance Unit, has an objective to support the country in its efforts to uphold democratic governance, human rights and the rule of law through enhanced empowerment of the people and strengthening of relevant governance institutions.

Amkeni provides support to civil society organizations working on the demand side of promoting democratic governance, and the protection and promotion of human rights in Kenya and especially for the poor and marginalised.

One of the ways it does this is by funding and building capacity of CSOs who meet specific qualification criteria after various Expressions of Interest/Calls for Proposals.

Overall objectives
  • To enable citizens to benefit politically, socially and economically from a more accountable, just, transparent and democratic society that upholds respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
  • To support civic engagement which empowers all people to influence public policies through CSOs, voluntary associations, trade unions, political parties, private sector organizations and citizens’ audits.
The Task

Amkeni Wakenya now seeks to engage the services of four Consultants to lead in the sign language interpretation services of the Facility’s various 2011 workshops/ forums on an “as and when needed” basis.

Qualifications, Skills & Experience
  • Proven past experience in providing interpretation for similar functions.
  • College level education in sign language
  • Professional training in Deaf and Sign Language interpretation.
  • Three (3) years in sign language interpretation work.
  • Previous work with UNDP or any other UN Agency is an added advantage.
Timeframe and Duration

Provide Sign Language interpretation services from 15th March 2011 to 31st December 2011 on an “as and when needed” basis.

The Bible Society of Kenya (BSK) is a nonsectarian, nondenominational organization that serves all Christian Churches, Christian Church Organizations and Christian Individuals by providing them with the Word of God.

Our mandate is to share the Good News of Jesus Christ by Translating, Producing, Distributing and encouraging the use of Holy Scriptures.

To effectively serve our mandate and to ensure the consistent delivery of quality programs, we are looking for mature, dynamic and self-motivated individuals to fill the position of Revisers for Maasai Bible (3) and Translators for Teso Bible (3).

The successful candidates will be responsible for the accurate revision of the present Maasai Bible and translation of Teso Bible respectively in relation to the original Hebrew and Greek texts. The translation offices will be located within the Maa speaking region and Teso speaking region.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Degree in linguistics or theology or its equivalent from a recognized university or theological institution. A degree in translation studies will be an added advantage.
  • At least two years study of Greek and/or Hebrew language is an added advantage.
  • KCSE aggregate average of C+ or its equivalent with a credit in English.
  • Minimum age of 25 years.
  • Good knowledge in speaking and writing Maa language for Maasai Bible Revision and Teso language for translators of the Teso Bible.
  • Lay or ordained committed Christians from the Protestant and Catholic faith who fully participate in their churches.

FilmAid Kenya Kiswahili and Somali Translator (Part time) Vacancy

Position: Kiswahili and Somali Translator (Part time)

FilmAid International (FilmAid Kenya) invites qualified Kenyan applications to fill the above position on a part time basis. FilmAid will accept applications from either translator of Kiswahili and Somali separately though individuals conversant with both languages will have an added advantage

FilmAid International is a non-governmental organization that uses film to promote health, strengthen communities and enrich the lives of the world’s vulnerable and uprooted. FilmAid is currently implementing programmes in Kakuma and Dadaab refugee camps in Kenya.

Responsibilities:
  • Translate scripts from English to Kiswahili and Somali
  • Work closely with the production consultant and voice actors to produce voice-overs in Swahili and Somali
  • Work with a video editor and production consultant to ensure that translations are represented correctly in videos through subtitles and voice over dubbing
  • Translate a video facilitation manual from English into Kiswahili and Somali
Requirements:
  • Knowledge of Somali and Swahili language
