Organizational Description:

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is one of the largest humanitarian agencies in the world, providing relief, rehabilitation and post‐conflict reconstruction support to victims of oppression and violent conflict. 

IRC has worked for over seven decades and today is involved in over 25 conflict zones in the world. 

We address both the immediate, life saving needs of conflict affected people in an emergency and the reconstruction needs in post conflict societies.

The IRC is an international agency with offices in London, New York, and Geneva.

Background:

The International Rescue Committee has been active in Somalia since 2007, providing essential services to IDPs and the communities who host them. 

The IRC today implement environmental health and livelihood security projects in Central Somalia. 

The program addresses critical issues of public health and livelihood security by targeting access to clean water, sanitation facilities, animal health assistance, redistribution of productive assets and income opportunities through Cash‐for‐Work activities. 

The IRC in Somalia operates a field office in Mudug region which ensure program support in all parts of the region.

Scope of Work:

The Program Volunteer would be part of the Nairobi based Program/Grants management team led by the Program Coordinator and contributing to efficient proposal and concept note development, reporting and grants monitoring roles. 

In addition, the person is expected to develop communication updates for donors and other stakeholders. 

The person would be based in Nairobi and is not normally expected to travel to Somalia. 

The person will work with an experienced and friendly team of professionals and a dynamic work environment and would be able to learn significantly from the assignment.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist in donor intelligence search (donor scoping studies)
  • Assist in the development of concept notes and donor proposals
  • Participate in program assessments‐ background information search, discussion with other agencies, coordination meetings
  • Assist in the preparation of donor reports, internal IRC reports
  • Perform grants management functions including
  1. Supporting in grant opening/closing meeting
  2. Participate in BVA meetings
  3. Preparing grants update sheets
  4. Maintaining updated information in electronic and hard copy files,
  5. Share information with field teams
  • Review program monthly reports including 3W (Who, Where, What) matrix to be submitted to the UN
  • Develop and update communication materials related to IRC Somalia and its programs to be shared with donors, Government and IRC headquarters as necessary
  • Assist in the program documentation and communication
Person Specifications
  1. Experience in writing concept notes, proposals etc related to development or humanitarian work
  2. Willingness to learn, adapt to team working environment
  3. Computer literacy‐ word, excel, internet, and any other page set up program
  4. Excellent spoken and written English skill. Somali language ability a plus

WFP’s Regional Aviation Safety Office based in Nairobi, is seeking to recruit a qualified Kenyan national to fill the post of National Aviation Safety Officer in support of its humanitarian air operations in Kenya, Sudan, Somalia, Tanzania and Uganda.

Key tasks and responsibilities: Under the direct supervision of Regional Aviation Safety Officer the National Aviation Safety Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Ensure the effectiveness of the aviation safety program and data collection in the region.
  • Perform aviation safety and quality monitoring.
  • Maintain a safety management information system and database locally.
  • Assist safety and quality processes including audits and inspections
  • Identify aviation safety hazards and ensure that accurate reporting and internal quality control systems are functioning and that all relevant records are maintained.
  • Perform follow-up and analysis of occurrences using such methods as: trend monitoring, deep treatment (single occurrence-investigative needs), precursor detection (data mining), risk assessment & classification (prioritisation of oversight), statistics, standard reports and analysis workbenches, and remedial action monitoring.
  • Ensure data quality, data entry and effective monitoring processes.
  • Enhance air transport operations’ and service providers’ reporting systems and data sharing.
  • Perform risk assessment and regarding the findings perform corrective actions.
  • Disseminate significant safety information to all concerned parties.
  • Enhance service providers’ safety culture and promotion of safety awareness.
  • Ensure that all staff is adequately trained. Train safety and air transport personnel to use aviation safety information system prior to safety and quality monitoring and risk management. Identify any additional training needs to achieve high working standards.
  • Assist in the implementation of the aviation safety information system and network
  • Supervise staff as required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications: 
  • University degree in business administration, engineering, computer science, quality assurance, technical, statistics or management; and with equivalent professional operational experience in aviation. Training and knowledge of aviation is an essential qualification, with a recognized commercial pilot, aircraft engineer, or dispatching license. 
  • Experience: At least 5 years of progressively responsible, practical commercial aviation and professional experience, with at least one or more years experience with safety or quality assurance programmes. Job related experience in working in the field of commercial aviation of which at least one year or more was closely related to humanitarian air operations or food aid related work. Adequate knowledge and experience of aircraft technical, flight operations or air traffic management sectors. Proficiency in Windows (MS Word, Excel), database experience. 
  • Language: Fluency in both written and oral English. 
  • Other desirable skills: Training and /or experience in aviation safety management and proven interest to develop aviation safety. Additional computer knowledge such as use of graphical, spreadsheet and other software packages.

    Deng Foundation Request for Volunteers, 18th-24th December, 2010


    Deng Foundation in partnership with the Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare is supporting the Disability Rights Advocacy Group (DRAG) in organizing the 1st National Convention on Disability and Development: “Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in the referenda and beyond” on 21st -22nd December, 2010.

    This will be the first ever Convention in the semi-autonomous region of Southern Sudan to bring together Disabled Persons Organizations (DPOs), stakeholders and experts, Community Based Organizations (CBOs), Community Based Rehabilitations (CBRs), Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs with a component of disability to address the following objectives:-

    •    Discuss Civic and Voter Education on the referenda of 2011 of Southern Sudan and Abyei and popular consultations on Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile.
    •    Establish a network of DPOs, stakeholders, and CBOs, CBRs, CSOs, NGOs with a component of disability.
    •    Develop strategies for future advocacy and legislation on inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in all aspect of life.

    DRAG is guided by the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities- optional protocol- ratified by Sudan on 24th April, 2009.  The vision of the Convention is to form a consolidated voice to campaign for the inclusion of Persons with Disabilities on current and future legislations, and all aspects of day-to-day life.

    We are looking for volunteers to work with the organizers and attendees from 18th -24 Dec, 2010.
    •    Volunteers can work during the hours of 9:00am-5:00pm depending on their availability and the task assigned.
    •    Volunteers will be responsible for ensuring the smooth running of the Convention and overall logistics.
    •    Our volunteers say they feel rewarded many times over for the help they provide in making a difference in the lives of Persons with disabilities.
