Project Manager Job Vacancy


The International School of Kenya is seeking a Project Manager for a US$ 14M construction project. 

The completion period is 18 months, beginning immediately.

The Project Manager has overall responsibility for the planning, management, coordination and financial control of Phase II of ISK’s Facilities Master Plan, and will work closely with a range of professionals during the contract process. It will be within the Project Manager’s responsibility to see that the school’s wishes are adhered to and that the project is completed within the budget agreed. 

The Project Manager will develop full-scale project plans including identification, proposal formulation, planning, budgeting, implementation, evaluation and report writing. 

The Project Manager reports to the Business Manager.

Job Purpose

Responsible for all technical aspects of the container fabrication Project including preparation of bills of materials, interpreting drawings, making amendments to existing drawings, preparing drawings in AUTO CAD, daily and weekly progress reporting and preparation of schedule of works. 

As a management position working across line functions, this position requires strong engineering background, excellent organizational and interpersonal skills to align various departments towards the goal of the organization.

Job Responsibilities
  • Responsible for preparing designs, calculations, analyses, etc. in accordance with established codes and standards.
  • Responsible for analyzing simple structural members and designing the same with either steel, timber or concrete materials, using both Limit States and Allowable Stress methods.
  • Responsible for reviewing, and interpreting all design drawings, dimensions and calculation analysis.
  • Preparation of bills of materials as per drawing and tender specifications.
  • Interpreting drawings and making amendments to existing drawings to suit revised requirements.
  • Preparing new drawings in AUTO CAD as per client requirements.
  • Coordinate with all persons in interface in preparing daily, progress reports on progress made.
  • Preparation of schedule of works for each task order in MS Project and track actual progress vs plan.
Qualifications
  • Suitable Candidate should Possess a degree in an Engineering discipline from a recognized institution, preferably in Mechanical Engineering and;
  • Experienced in engineering, interior design and drawing – 3D dimensions and Auto Cad
  • Must understand various engineering processes and quality controls e.g. Fabrication, welding, plumbing and technical drawing and basic interior design
  • Must have worked in a busy engineering setup for approximately 3 years.
  • Must be well versed with client management and interaction
  • Must possess good business acumen
  • Must be of good integrity and moral standing.
  • Must understand project costing.

Specific Job Responsibilities
  • Implementing Aphiaplus component of the project.

Panos Eastern Africa - Project Officer Job in Nairobi


Panos Eastern Africa has secured funding from OAK Foundation to support children, CSOs and the media to illuminate and address child protection concerns affecting children in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Ethiopia. 

The project will address issues of institutionalization of child care, reduction of violence against children, development of child protection policies and systems and addressing challenges faced by children on the move.
 
Panos Eastern Africa shall build partnership with child protection agencies, the media, the government institutions, the children and other interested actors to illuminate these issues, create platforms for public discourse, influence policy decisions and actions, increase child participation, media action and public child protection in National Agenda of the four countries with a view of addressing challenges and abuses faced by children. 

Panos Eastern Africa is therefore seeking to recruit a Project Officer based in Nairobi, to provide leadership in effective and efficient implementation, monitoring, evaluation and documentation of project outcomes and ensure lessons are shared with wider audiences.
 
The Project Officer shall report to the Regional Programmes Director based in Kampala, Uganda.
 
Key deliverables
  • Commission of a baseline survey to examine existing skills of the journalists on general child protection issues and the selected child protection stakeholders to establish the nature and level of their engagement with the media.
  • Establish/strengthen the relationship with the lead project partner organisations in the country, facilitate the development of joint action/work plans, explore and build synergies between their work and the project objectives and goal.
  • Work towards strengthening the relationship between the media and stakeholders working on issues of child protection and with particular focus on promoting the lead role of the media
  • Create/strengthen media platforms to illuminate child protection issues in the country
  • Develop skills of journalists/Media to report and cover child protection issues through trainings, fellowship awards, participating in stakeholder forums and regular review meetings of their activities
  • Establish/Strengthen child journalism in the country to provide children with a platform to play a lead role in amplifying the issues affecting them.
  • In collaboration with the PEA communications office create an interactive online platform for child protection issues.
  • Organise annual reflection forum on the project’s progress, child protection issues for the media, partners and relevant stakeholders.
  • Lead the process of developing a child protection policy for partner media houses, partner organisations and PEA country office.
  • Develop/adapt tools to monitor, evaluate and document all activities implemented during the project
  • Compile and submit timely monthly, quarterly, bi – annual and annual reports in accordance with donor guidelines
  • Participate in Resource Mobilisation and Fundraising initiatives of Panos Eastern Africa.
Qualifications, knowledge, skills and abilities
  • A first degree in development studies, social sciences, human rights, journalism or related area. A post graduate qualification shall be an added advantage.
  • Must have a minimum of three years experience in development work with demonstrated experience in policy, research and programme management.
  • Strong writing skills, including experience producing proposals, reports, and other information materials
  • Experience in Child Protection and a general understanding of the child protection issues is essential.
  • Good public relations demonstrated by experience in networking, working with partners and providing supervisory support.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision and to achieve all set targets in line with short, medium and long term targets and objectives as specified in the project and other documents
  • Knowledge of the information sector, media and development

Background to the HSNP

The Hunger Safety Net Programme (HSNP) is a long term social protection programme in Kenya funded by UKaid from the Department for international Development, AusAID and in partnership with the ministry for Development OF Northern Kenya and other Arid Lands. 

The aim is to reduce extreme poverty; vulnerability and hunger and also develop a national social protection framework in Kenya. The programmes aims to achieve its objectives by delivering long-term guaranteed cash transfers to extremely poor and vulnerable households to improve access to food protect assets and reduce the impact of shocks.

HelpAge is one of the consultants that was mandated to deliver the social protection rights component in the just completed phase 1 of the HSNP programme and has been contracted to deliver the social protection rights component in phase 2 which will run from 2012 to 2017. 

The programme is being implemented in Wajir, Mandera, Marsabit and Turkana districts with HelpAge’s role in the programme being to promote the realization of rights of programme beneficiaries and the rights of the wider communities in all the four counties. 

It is expected that HelpAge will work with government institutions and other stakeholders to realise its objectives and ultimately handover its responsibilities to the government to ensure a sustainable rights based grievance mechanism.

Overall Job Purpose

The post-holder will be responsible for management of HSNP Social Protection Rights project in Northern Kenya.

Responsibilities:
  1. Project management of the HSNP SPR component including Contract Management, coordination of field teams and financial management
  2. On-going design and documentation of the HSNP’s complaints, appeals, referrals and dispute resolution mechanisms.
  3. Effective Production of high quality and timely quarterly narrative and financial reports for the HSNP Secretariat.
  4. Management of a risk-based grievance mechanism and leadership of evidence-based beneficiary advocacy within the HSNP.
  5. Responsibility for management of HSNP project staff in Lodwar and EWCARDC office
  6. Coordination of the SPR component’s M&E exercise and contribution to the HSNP’s and HelpAge’s learning objectives.
  7. Management of the HSNP SPR component’s Management Information System (MIS).
  8. Coordination and capacity building of HelpAge’s implementing partners in northern Kenya.
  9. Development of high quality communications materials to support programme implementation. This to include piloting innovative methodologies in partnership with HelpAge’s implementing partners.
  10. Monitoring of project activities and ensuring contract deliverables are met and donor and management reports are accurate and timely;
  11. Donor liaison and relationship building with all stakeholders
  12. Manage project expenditures by ensuring budget is strictly adhered to, financial procedures are observed and all supporting documents are provided
  13. Representation of HelpAge on the HSNP’s multi-agency national programme management team.
  14. Translate project objectives to support the wider social protection agenda and HelpAge strategic objectives
  15. Participate in annual planning activities and coordinate with other staff on developing internal programme linkages, sharing learning and documentation of good practices.
  16. Undertake any other duties as and when necessary to fulfil the objectives of the HSNP SPR component according to donor requirements and HelpAge’s internal policies and procedures.
Person Specification:
  • The following criteria are considered as essential: 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Social sciences or Development Studies with a post graduate qualification in Project Planning and Management 
  • At least 5 years experience in management of complex programmes/projects and at least 7 years working in an NGO environment. 
  • Experience in budget and financial management including managing funds from major donors e.g. DFID Understanding of the social protection policy agenda in Africa 
  • Experience in operational management, including distance management of field staff. 
  • Experience in capacity building and working with civil society-based organisations. 
  • Knowledge of cash transfers and social pension practices in Kenya 
  • Excellent report writing, analytical and data interpretation skills 
  • Strong team working and negotiation skills. 
  • Ability to show initiative, innovativeness and to work under pressure. Ability to travel to northern Kenya frequently 
  • Excellent communication skills
In addition, the following will are considered desirable:
  • Experience in cash-based interventions; 
  • Some experience in the design or management of complaints mechanisms and/or dispute resolution. 
  • Experience in a rights based project/programme

Financial Sector Deepening (FSD) Kenya FinAccess Project Coordinator Job


The opportunity
 
In 2006, FSD Kenya funded the first nationally representative survey on access to financial services in Kenya, subsequently referred to as FinAccess 2006, which gave the first reliable measure of the national demand for and use of financial services at the individual level. 

A cross-section of stakeholders was assembled to oversee the project, and the resulting stakeholder group - the Financial Access Partnership (FAP) - has been active in doing so, chaired by the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK). 

Within a relatively short period FinAccess has been established as the leading source of reliable data on financial access in Kenya and is widely cited in the media and by Government, the private sector and international development partners. 

The last survey was conducted in 2009 and plans are well underway for the next round of the FinAccess demand and supply-side surveys. We are also initiating studies looking at the demand and supply of financial services to businesses.
 
We are now looking for a Project Coordinator for FinAccess who will be responsible for the implementation of the FinAccess studies. 

This position requires a dynamic and self-motivated person with an understanding of financial inclusion issues and an understanding for the landscape of financial service providers in Kenya.
 
S/he will be responsible for the FinAccess project management, reporting, budgeting and procurement.

Organization Background   

YESS, Kenya was registered in 2005 as a local NGO under the NGOs Coordination Act. 

YESS, Kenya was born out of the recognition of the need to address youth marginalization and has tailored its approach to comprehensively reach out to young people with a view to jointly with them and other stakeholders addressing their plight resulting from years of exclusion through advocacy, capacity building and direct services.

Using an all rounded and integrated approach to addressing the needs of the youth, YESS-Kenya has developed a multi pronged approach to bring on board youth in voicing their concerns. 

Among the key organization activities include; Youth Advocacy and Social Action-YESS-Kenya jointly with other stakeholders supports youth to undertake effective policy analysis, engage in policy advocacy actions, develop advocacy networks and coalitions and increase youth interactions with key decision makers in society. 

Currently YESS, Kenya is implementing a one year project aimed at increasing youth access to devolved funds including the youth enterprise fund, Kazi kwa Vijana and the CDF among others in Nakuru and Naivasha funded by USAID through Act, Kenya. 

The project is being implemented in Nakuru and Naivasha districts with coordination from YESS Kenya Nairobi Office. 

In addition the Project Officer will be expected to implement advocacy activities in Nairobi as well as to monitor an ongoing civic education project in Kipkelion District in Kericho County. 

The Initial Contract for assignment runs for 5 months.

Key Responsibilities
  • Overall guidance, implementation and monitoring of activities in advocacy on youth access to devolved funds and civic education.
  • Design project implementation strategies and deliver all outputs project outputs in the four project implementation sites.
  • Lead in development and distribution of youth information packs on devolved funds with specific focus to target districts.
  • Lead project partnerships in advocacy and resource mobilization at national and county levels.
  • Be in charge of implementation of civic education strategies in Kericho County.
  • Ensure quality, efficient and timely reporting for all project activities on a monthly and quarterly basis.
  • Develop an exit strategy for the two main projects being implemented in Nairobi, Nakuru and Kericho Counties.
  • Link YESS Kenya project efforts to policy makers and implementers as the strategies require.
  • Provide technical support youth groups and youth CBOs in the targeted counties.
  • Policy tracking and analysis to support advocacy work and monitor and report policy changes on devolution.
  • Be in charge of regular monitoring and reporting to YESS Kenya Management.
Qualifications
  • First Degree in social science, social work or community development.
  • A Masters Degree in a related discipline is an added advantage.  
  • Computer Literacy in MS Office a must.
Required Competences.
  • Ability to write clear and concise reports and good  command of spoken and written English and Kiswahili
  • Proven skills and experience in project cycle management including design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
  • Past experience in advocacy, working in partnership with government officers and civil society representatives.
  • An orientation to youth work and youth concerns as well as the current governance regime especially in relation to devolution, social protection and G.O.K government poverty alleviation strategies.
  • Conversant with the human rights approaches and able to apply them within the framework of the constitution of Kenya 2010.
  • Some orientation to policy analysis and evidence based programming.
  • Proven ability to produce results within tight deadlines and under pressure
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to interact effectively with different cadres of technical people and leaders
  • Analytical skills and decision making ability even in complex and sensitive situations

Job Purpose
 
Reporting to the KCSSP Deputy Chief of Party, the Project Manager shall be responsible for the implementation and administration of the SAFE Coast project at the coast of Kenya. 

The jobholder will lead in the preparation of work plans, budgets and technical reports as well as collaboration in the monitoring and evaluation of the program in addition to directly overseeing all on-the-ground implementation activities. 

In addition the project manager shall oversees the day to day management of the project, its staff, as well as be responsible in ensuring that property related to the project is handled with utmost caution as per the Pact
guidelines. 

He/She will be Pact’s local representative working with communities, the 10 CSO partners, Peace Committees and local government agencies local administration and any other stakeholders that are part of or involved with the SAFE project. 

This is a Mombasa based position with frequent and extended travel within the coastal region.

Description of Duties
 
Project Management
  • Provide leadership, coordination, and management of the Project Implementation Plan
  • Ensure implantation in line with budget and project document
  • Provide monthly financial forecasts and review expenditure and reports for both direct costs and partners
  • Review grant implementation as per calendar to ensure implementation is as per schedule
  • Manages and supervises the work of the Project team, and logistics and procurement officer and driver working on this project.
  • Ensure donor regulations are respected and all donor and Pact policies and procedures are respected.
Project Coordination
  • Liaise on a regular basis with the KCSSP team to ensure the coordination of Safe Coast activities within the larger project.
  • Liaises with the rest of the KCSSP and Pact projects in building synergy and sharing of lessons learned.
  • Ensure regular coordination and communication with partners.
  • Ensure partners are coordinating amongst themselves and sharing lessons
  • Liaison, Communication and representation
  • Coordinates all external meetings related to the project
  • Represents Pact at meetings within the area of operation, the wider network and beyond as directed
  • Support in improving networking contacts with external parties through meetings and disseminating timely information
  • Strengthen partners’ relations based on respect among equals and geared towards empowering the community.
  • Develops and oversees communication and strategies to reach multiple stakeholder groups as per the media component of the project
Monitoring and evaluation
  • Preparation of monthly, quarterly, annual reports and reports required
  • Oversee the monitoring of the story telling component of the monitoring
  • Ensure timely reporting on key issues and trends at the coast as they arise this will include notes from meetings, updates on trends in political situation
  • Ensure partners and colleagues are collecting stories and photos of activities to better communicate Interaction with Key Pact and ACT! staff
The Project coordinator will be managed Deputy Chief of Party. 

He/she will interact on a day to day basis and work very closely with:
  • Program Manager, Peace building and Conflict Management.
  • The KCSSP Chief of Party and Deputy Chief of Party
  • The Pact Senior Program Officer
  • The Pact Program Officer
  • Communications Officer
  • The Grants Managers
He /she will also work with all KCSSP peace building program officers including the Democracy and Governance and Monitoring Evaluation Results and Learning teams
 
Skills and Qualifications
 
The minimum requirements:
  • A degree in Social Sciences. A Master’s degree in related field an added advantage
  • Post graduate diploma in Project Management an added advantage
  • 8-10 years experience in planning and or management of program areas, program management in an NGO– experience in Peace building and Governance setting an added advantage
  • Experience managing a USAID funded project/ program
  • Experience in community based resource management, peace building and governance
  • Excellent communication skills both in English and Swahili
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team to coordinate and lead the efforts of other professionals too effectively meet program needs.
  • Ability to work effectively with governmental and non-governmental organizations and local communities in carrying out Program objectives
  • Knowledge and experience in the implementation of peace and development projects in the coastal region
  • Fluency in English
  • Proficiency French and/or Kiswahili preferred

Job Title: Wash Project Officers (Local Post)
 
Base Location: Gaalkacyo Puntland- Somalia
 
Reporting To: Wash Coordinator
 
Job Objective

The overall responsibility of the WASH project officer is to ensure planned project interventions are implemented according to regulation and standards of Islamic relief, donor guidelines and local IDP leader. 

She/he makes sure that the project interventions are coordinated among the communities, and other humanitarian agencies which are now operational regions of Somalia. 

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Review existing level of hygiene and sanitation knowledge, attitude and practice among IDPs and host communities to implement need based intervention on continual basis
  • Prepare detailed project implementation plan in consultation with WASH Coordinator in the course of project duration , present revised plans  as and when required as part of remedial action if the project implementation strategy requires redirection, change of location or any other reasons
  • Locate project sites in consultation with local IDP leaders, community representatives and other agencies.
  • Implement the project activities when detailed plans are approved by the WASH Coordinator
  • Mobilise Camp committee members and the IDP community for the implementation of the sanitation and hygiene project intervention
  • Ensure all WASH project activities in the camps are implemented in a consultative and participative manner. This involves community participation in planning and launching sanitation and hygiene education and  campaigns, and monitoring results through their representatives
  • Effectively guide, oversee and monitor IR WASH Project activities; report on findings with clear recommendations and take corrective actions when necessary
  • Ensure that regular WASH progress reports are accurate and are submitted on time
  • Assist in planning, organizing and facilitation of the various WASH trainings
  • Take lead in conducting case studies and assessments before and after the project implementation stages and report as deemed necessary
  • Carry out field data collection and compilation for all WASH projects
  • Provide leadership in conducting hygiene promotion and awareness campaigns in the camps
  • Supervise latrine construction activities and ensure quality control for the construction works
  • Carry out other tasks and assignments as required by the immediate supervisor
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Competencies:
  • Relevant qualification in water and sanitation and/or public health
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant work experience in implementation of water and sanitation projects. Those with experience in  latrine construction and supervision  in emergency setup  including working in IDP camps in insecure environments will have an added advantage
  • Good Project Management skills
  • Good analytical and report writing skills
  • Good computer skills, particularly use of Microsoft Word, Excel and internet
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, especially with internally displaced people
  • Ability to function well in a team environment
  • Willingness to work in the camps
  • Previous work experience in IDP camps  in Somalia is an added advantage
  • Ability to operate in  a dynamic environment
