Summary:

We seek a molecular virologist of outstanding ability to join a dynamic team of researchers working on the epidemiology, evolution and control of respiratory and enteric viruses, including respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) for which the group is internationally recognised. 

The successful candidate will support studies relating to molecular and immuno-epidemiology, transmission dynamics, genetic; antigenic diversity, and evolution of a range of viruses. 

We require post-doctoral level support in relevant molecular biological techniques such as quantitative real time PCR, sequencing and phylogenetics, protein and peptide synthesis and expression. 

We are looking for an individual with the capacity to support on-going studies and, importantly, aptitude to develop independent lines of enquiry. 

Priority will be given to candidates from Kenya or the East Africa Region. This is a two year contract in the first instance.

Principle duties and responsibilities:
  • Provide leadership in all molecular virology activities of the VEC group
  • Work closely with the lab manager in operating molecular biology facility
  • Provide technical support and guidance in molecular biological techniques operated by the research group to technical and research staff involved, including troubleshooting
  • Develop and implement new molecular-based assays, eg quantitative real time PCR
  • Undertake tasks including primer/probe design, cloning, sequencing and protein expression
  • Support viral screen of archived and prospective nasal specimens, including training of staff
  • Extend ongoing investigations of the molecular epidemiology of RSV, adenoviruses, human metapneumovirus, influenza viruses and coronaviruses, etc
  • Develop Group’s interest in Next Generation Sequencing using in-house Ion-Torrent technology
  • Conduct RSV immuno-epidemiology based on strain specific peptides
  • Represent the group at Cluster and Programme level, including committee membership
  • Coordinate group’s involvement in seminar series, journal clubs and lab management
  • Write protocols for scientific/ethical/funder review, reports and scientific papers
Education, experience and skills:

  • PhD in Molecular Virology
  • Experience in PCR, cloning and sequencing
  • Ability to work well within a team
  • Excellent communication skills both oral and written
  • Aptitude for scientific independence and leadership
Desirable:        
  • Bioinformatics expertise

Job Profile
  • The Director will be the Chief Executive Officer and secretary to the Board.
  • Be responsible for overall coordination and management of research and extension services in the Foundation.

Person Profile
  • Must have a PhD in a relevant agricultural science field from a recognized university. Experience in tea science will be an added advantage.
  • Minimum ten (10) years research experience, five (5) of which must have been in a senior management position in a medium to a large sized Research organization.
  • A proven track record in publishing in peer reviewed journals and demonstrable experience in innovation and products development.
  • Knowledge and experience on tea and perennial crops issues and challenges in Kenya.
  • Knowledge of government policies and regulations on financial management, public procurement and human resources management.
  • A motivated, innovative and result-oriented team player.
  • Ability to mobilize funding for research.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.

World Agroforestry Centre Senior Scientist (Capacity Development) Job

About the position

ICRAF seeks to recruit a candidate for the position of Senior Scientist: Capacity Development to be based at its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. Reporting to the Deputy Director General responsible for Partnerships and Impact.

The incumbent will provide leadership in the following key areas which are illustrated in ICRAF’s capacity development strategy:
  • Assess partner needs and identify capacity constraints;
  • Develop and implement intervention programmes and projects for agroforestry capacity development (including methods and tools for assessing success/impact);
  • Capture the capacity development aspects from CGIAR Research Programmes (CRPs) and develop effective strategies for implementation and monitoring them in partnership with sister CGIAR centres and partners
  • Incorporate the partner capacity needs into resource mobilization proposals for donor support;
  • Enhance coordination and quality management of ICRAF’s capacity development work;
  • Support the development of learning resources and curricula;
  • Undertake research on capacity development in agroforestry and closely related areas and organizations; and
  • Work with ICRAF scientists to strengthen partner capacity.
Requirements
  • PhD in Agroforestry, Agriculture, Forestry, or other relevant discipline with specialization in environment or natural sciences
  • A minimum of ten years post-graduation experience in capacity development in a tropical developing country
  • Demonstrated track record of research, publishing and evaluation in the capacity development field at international level
  • Fluency in oral and written English is required; ability to communicate in Spanish and/or French would be an added advantage
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, especially in a multicultural environment
  • Excellent facilitation skills
Of added advantage would be:
  • Qualifications and/or experience in education and educational technology
  • Familiarity with the CGIAR system
  • Familiarity with agriculture and forestry in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

  • Studies methods to improve quality of foods, such as flavor, color, texture, nutritional value, convenience, or physical, chemical, and microbiological composition of foods.
  • Develops food standards, safety and sanitary regulations, and waste management and water supply specifications.
  • Tests new products in test kitchen and develops specific processing methods in laboratory pilot plant, and confers with process engineers, flavor experts, and packaging and marketing specialists to resolve problems.
  • Conduct standardized tests on food, beverages, additives, and preservatives in order to ensure compliance with standards and regulations regarding factors such as color, texture, and nutrients.
  • Provide assistance to food scientists and technologists in research and development, production technology, and quality control.
  • Compute moisture or salt content, percentages of ingredients, formulas, or other product factors, using mathematical and chemical procedures.
  • Examine chemical and biological samples in order to identify cell structures, and to locate bacteria, or extraneous material, using microscope.

IPA Lab Coordinator Job in Nairobi


Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Benefits Project

IPA’s WASH Benefits Project is a five year study to evaluate the health benefits of sanitation, hygiene, household water treatment and nutrition using a large-scale, randomized evaluation in Western Province.

In the first phase of the study, to commence in early 2012, WASH Benefits will work in 1,000 villages, conduct 10,000 baseline surveys, and deliver interventions to 10,000 households. The project will be based out of two satellite offices in Western Province. The principal investigators of WASH benefits are Michael Kremer and Clair Null.

IPA’s water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) benefits project seeks a qualified applicant for the position of Lab Coordinator.

The Lab Coordinator will manage sample collection, processing, and analysis of child stool, blood, and urine samples in Western Kenya in order to meet the project objectives to measure environmental enteropathy and parasite infections among young children.

The position offers an opportunity to gain first-hand field management experience in an organization undertaking cutting-edge development research. This position will be based in Nairobi, Kenya, with travel to Kakamega and other areas of Western Kenya.

The Lab Coordinator will work closely with the WASH benefits management team, academic researchers, and project collaborators at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and Moi University.

The Lab Coordinator position will be based at KEMRI’s headquarters in Nairobi.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and oversee implementation of field protocols to collect and process stool and blood samples
  • Develop and oversee implementation of lab processing protocols, including:
  1. ELISA assays on venous blood serum to test for indicators of environmental enteropathy (gut inflammation and gut permeability).
  2. ELISA assays to test stool samples for markers of gut inflammation.
  3. ELISA assays to test stool samples for Giardia, Cryptosporidium, and E. histolytica
  4. Kato-Katz microscopy to test stool samples for hookworm, Trichuris, and Ascaris
  • Managing lab technicians, including development and implementation of quality control and quality assurance procedures and checking and analyzing data
  • Cleaning data and assisting in preliminary analysis
  • Assisting in the writing of project reports and policy memos
  • Coordinating with local partners, including KEMRI and Moi University
Desired Qualifications and Experience
  • At least 3 years of biological laboratory experience
  • Experience performing ELISA assays required
  • Experience performing Kato-Katz microscopy preferred
  • A Bachelor's degree in biology, environmental health, or related fields.
  • Experience living in a developing country is a strong plus
  • Excellent management and organizational skills along with strong quantitative skills
  • Fluency and excellent communication skills in English; fluency in Swahili is a strong plus
  • Flexible, self-motivating, able to manage multiple tasks efficiently, and team player
  • Demonstrated ability to manage high-level relationships with partner organizations

icipe Postdoctoral Research Career Opportunity - IPM Programmes


icipe is an intergovernmental organisation funded by government aid agencies, UN organisations and private foundations to carry out research and training in environmentally sound and sustainable management of arthropods for improved health and agricultural productivity in the tropics.

icipe has approximately 350 staff to support its research and capacity building programmes, located at various sites in Kenya and Ethiopia.

icipe seeks to urgently hire a highly motivated candidate to join an established interdisciplinary team dedicated to the development of sustainable IPM programmes for mango and cashew pests in sub-Saharan Africa.

Responsibilities
  • The incumbent will plan and direct semiochemical ecology work to support the implementation of environmentally acceptable interventions to manage Bactrocera invadens (an invasive fruit flies of mango) and mirid of cashew.
  • Lead a balanced basic and applied research program targeted towards developing new female-biased attractants from blends of host fruit volatiles for monitoring, mass trapping and suppression.
  • Explore the exact identity of key ligands from host fruit volatiles using linked gas chromatography-single sensillum recordings (SSR),
  • Develop and formulate blends of compounds, carry out field testing of the compounds in comparisons with standard food attractants, as well as quantifying their impact on the target pests and their compatibility with other IPM packages.
  • Expected to be among a team conducting complementary field suppression studies that incorporate entomopathogens, classical biological control, bait-based technology, and use of soft pesticide in an integrated system to manage other pests such as indigenous fruit fly, mango seed weevil and coreid pests.
The position requires cooperation with on-station research personnel in complementary disciplines and with NARS and mango and cashew growers in target countries. The Postdoctoral Fellow will be based at icipe’s headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, but will be expected to spend a portion of his/her time at Max Planck Institute of Chemical Ecology, Jena, Germany to participate in complementary research on fruit flies.

Requirements

The suitable candidate should have :
  • PhD in Entomology, Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry or any related Biological Science field with no more than 3 years experience
  • Excellent background in chemical ecology techniques (for example bioassay guided micro-identification of compounds, field assays, arthropod electrophysiology, gas chromatography and mass spectra analyses)
  • Good oral and written scientific communication skills
  • Oriented towards good scientific output
  • Proficiency in English language (with French as an added advantage)
  • The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with excellent interpersonal, management and organizational skills
  • Experience in working with fruit flies and mirid is desirable
