COUNTRY DIRECTOR - ANZA TANZANIA

Anza is looking for an exceptional Country Director fluent in Kiswahili to lead our recently established country office and all on-the-ground operations in Tanzania.

Anza is an award-winning international development startup that develops low-cost, income-generating technologies for African farmers. We have impacted over 2500 lives with solar cookers and hand-sanitation solutions in East Africa, but have recently shifted our focus to a revolutionary pushcart developed and tested over the last 9 months.  By enabling more efficient transport of water and other agricultural products, the Anza cart provides users with a 5-10x first year return on investment and the means to pull themselves out of poverty.  Anza is the Swahili word for "start," and economic empowerment for the bottom billion starts here.

Position Description

The Tanzania Country Director role is a career position (minimum 2-year contract) as we are looking for an exceptional manager to help us reach our goal of selling over 1 million Anza carts in the next five years.  You will work directly under the CEO as the leader of a small, but fast-growing office in charge of managing our African supply chain, distribution, and sales.

Anza is looking for a highly organized, experienced, and motivated manager with the drive and talent to build a country office from scratch.  You will hire key Tanzanian staff and oversee sales, distribution, and operations teams.  The ideal candidate will have a methodical approach to high-level strategy thinking, creative approach to selling to hard-to-reach base of the pyramid consumers, and relentless attention to detail and deadlines.  You will embrace the challenges of reaching $1-a-day farmers and building a world-class social enterprise.

We are a fast growing startup looking for someone who will thrive in a constantly changing environment.  You will need to be comfortable working independently, leading a multinational team, and traveling extensively to engage with partners, distributors, dealers, and end-users in urban and rural East Africa.  Anza hopes to transform millions of lives, and you will be an integral part of our management team as we work toward that goal.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the creation of Anza'a Tanzania Country Office in Northern Tanzania.
  • Work with the CEO to define and execute on a national distribution, marketing, and sales plans.
  • Oversee product launch and the refinement of Anza's national distribution and promotional strategies across multiple sales channels (distributors, MFIs, NGOs).
  • Manage all of Anza's on-the-ground operations, including but not limited to:
  • high-level strategic planning
  • hiring of all Tanzanian staff
  • managing the sales, distribution, and operations teams
  • overseeing accounting and legal matters
  • Help Anza create a strong and recognizable brand among rural end-users and supply chain partners.
  • Lead the Tanzanian office to achieve aggressive sales targets under a resource constrained budget.
  • Manage and track key performance metrics and continually refine Anza's implementation strategies across all sectors of operations.
Skills/Experience
  • Bachelor degree required. Masters in Business Administration (MBA) a plus.
  • Minimum of 1 year- experience working on the ground in operations in a social enterprise or NGO serving base of the pyramid consumers.  Experience working in East Africa a plus.
  • 3-7 years of professional experience in operations, sales, marketing, or distribution required.
  • Leadership experience in an office environment required. A previous management role in a development enterprise is strongly preferred.
  • Fluency in English is required, and fluency in Kiswahil is a significant plus.  A willingness to learn Kiswahili is required.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), analytical, and problem solving skills required.
  • Expertise with Microsoft Office (Excel, Powerpoint, Word) required.

Compensation
Anza offers compensation commensurate with comparable enterprises.

Location and Travel
Position is based out of Arusha/Moshi, Tanzania, but extensive travel throughout Tanzania and Kenya will be required.
