Tractor Driver to be based in Dadaab
CARE International in Kenya (CIK) is looking for suitably qualified candidates to fill the position of Tractor Driver to be based in Dadaab.
Tractor Driver, Ref: TD-8/2010 (Based in Dadaab)
Reporting to the Sanitation Officer at the camp level, the incumbent will be responsible for transporting garbage which is stored in skips, from the collection points in the camp to the land fill where the skips will be emptied. He will be required to supervise a team of loaders and solid waste workers.  
Job summary:The Tractor Driver will be responsible for tractor operations and backup to the public health officers in the camp. He will also oversee water supply and operations in the boreholes and in the agency compounds and the day to day activities of the four-tractor team/solid waste collectors. In addition, he will give support to the water supply officer (WSO) and the plant operation & maintenance staff. He will also file weekly, monthly and circumstantial fuel and production reports for the Boreholes and the compound gensets. Reporting also includes the solid waste disposal from waste dumping sites.
Responsibilities and tasks:
1.      Tractor operations.
  • Daily check
  • Minor repairs
  • Advising on service and requirements
  • Scheduling tractor operations in liaison with camp supervisor
  • Maintain an up to date fueling record and daily safari for the tractor and the allocated vehicles
  • Deliver sanitation and other materials to destinations required
  • Safe delivery of fuel to boreholes
2.      Refuse management
  • Carcass collection and disposal.
  • Waste collection and disposal from disposal sites (from collection points to landfill as is the case with Hagadera)
  • Camp cleaning campaigns.
  • Sensitization of general public on safe disposal methods.
3.      Support to sister sectors and sub sectors.
  • Assist in general transportation of WatESan and sister sectors materials.
  • Assist administration in driving duties.
  • Back up to support assistant sanitation officer in materials distribution and sanitary needs assessment.
4.      Monitoring
  • Maintaining tractor log
  • Maintaining borehole logs for the 6 boreholes
  • Track and update disposal record for onward reporting to supervisor.
  • Crosschecking borehole logs and dipping records.
5.      Water supply and compound power operations
  • Support water supply officer and plant operation and maintenance officer in executing water supply and compound gensets operation.
6.      Reporting.
  • Keep updated records of refuse quantities disposed
  • Keep updated fuel logs, water production and hours run for the six boreholes and the compound gen sets.
  • Report malfunctioning boreholes and compound gen sets and pumps to the supervisor.
7.      Associated duties/ responsibilities.
  • Shall adhere to and demonstrate CARE Kenyas core values of Justice, Excellence, Respect and Commitment (JERC) in all that they do and say.
Authority:                             
 Supervision: Over see the day to day activities to the tractor team, Bore Hole guards, Pump Operators and 1 Pump Monitor; this will include on job training and monitoring.
Contacts/key relationships:
Relate to other sector officers in the camp, other WatESan Officers in the other camps, and other agencies in the camp.
Working conditions:
  • As stated in the terms of the contract and CARE Kenya HR manual.
  • This is an unaccompanied posting
  • For security reasons, travel within Dadaab camps is restricted and inter camp movements are by scheduled convoys escorted by police. Adhere to convoy rules.
  • Will reside within CARE compound(s) while executing official duties and shall obey and adhere to residential compound regulations.
Qualifications:
  • Education: Grade 1 training in mechanics  and or experience an advantage
  • Experience: 3 years driving experience in handling a tractor in a busy firm
  • Competencies:  Knowledge of basic
  • Posses valid driving license for class B,C,E and D with over three years active experience in the field
