CONFLICT AND DISPUTE RESOLUTION STUDIES

Course Description:
The Conflict & Dispute Resolution Studies programme aims to encourage an understanding of the settlement of disputes in political, ethnic, community conflict and civil and commercial disputes. It also provides an overview of prevailing systems of remedy and redress and dispute resolution including ADR processes such as conciliation, facilitation, ombudsmanship and mediation with reference to the development of such concepts at home and in other jurisdictions, whether statutory or adopted on a voluntary basis.

This one year programme, is of value to those who wish to study non-adversarial dispute resolution processes. Recognized as a significant skill in the management toolbox, ADR (alternative dispute resolution) is now accepted as an untapped resource for reducing the damage caused by disputes which if they become entrenched will threaten business and working relationships. This Postgraduate Diploma is of particular interest to those, in both the public and private sectors, who wish to study civil mediation and other non-adversarial dispute and conflict resolution processes which are increasingly a part of legislative and management structures in the EU and internationally. The programme sets out to provide a forum in this area of study and practice, in order to establish standards of excellence and develop ethical standards and codes of conduct in the practice of conflict and dispute resolution that will have far-reaching influence. Through an alliance with Mediation Forum-Ireland those who complete the CDRS programme will have the opportunity to have their names included in the relevant specialist panel of Accredited Mediators. Students are required to take all core compulsory modules: Understanding Conflict, Aspects and Dynamics of Conflict, Theories and Processes of Conflict Resolution, Processes and Skills for Moving Beyond Conflict.

Assessment
The assessment consists of two essays of approximately 4,000 – 4,500 words each, a 4,000 – 4,500 written assignment, and on a practical skills-based assessment to be completed by 1 August. One essay will focus on the underlying theory and philosophy of conflict, the other essay will focus on the theories and processes of conflict resolution. The written assessment will focus on aspects and dynamics of conflict. The practical assessment will focus on the different processes and skills for moving beyond conflict, and will be on an area of specialization (which may be related to a particular work context). To complete the Diploma satisfactorily a pass mark of 40% must be achieved in each of the four assessments.

Admission Requirement: Applicants should normally have an honors degree and three years relevant experience, or another third level qualification and five years relevant experience. Students not meeting these criteria may exceptionally be considered at the discretion of the Dean of Graduate Studies.
