Background of FAWE-SS
Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) is the main UN partner for Gender Parity in education, and operates through national chapters run by the nationals of the country in each Sub-Saharan African Country.
The Ministry of Education, Government of Southern Sudan (MOE GOSS) recognizes that a strategic partnership with FAWE is one of the key strategies to invoke, and thus with the support of UNICEF, FAWE-SS has been legally established. FAWE-SS has also developed its draft 5 year Strategic plan through the support of FAWE Regional Secretariat and UNICEF Southern Sudan.
The MOE-GOSS recognizes FAWE-SS as a strategic partner in the education transformation process in Southern Sudan, particularly in the promotion of Gender Parity in Education. This will give southern Sudan to lead its own Gender Parity in Education agenda while borrowing from the experiences of other African Countries and networking with other FAWE chapters.
Key duties and responsibilities
Overriding goal
Strengthen FAWE-SS ability to coordinate and implement promotion and advocacy for girls’ education activities in line with FAWE-SS strategic objectives.
Expected outcomes
FAWE-SS is championing girls’ education and women empowerment through education in Southern Sudan.
Scope of duties and responsibilities
The FAWE-SS program Manager will work closely with the FAWE-SS National Coordinator in developing the FAWE-SS strategic work program and budget and ensure coordinated implementation, monitoring and reporting on the below programs:-
Policy Advocacy
- Forge partnership with MOE –GOSS, line Ministries, UN partners, NGOs and educational institutions in order to advance girls’ education
- Keep abreast with research findings on existing gender and educational practices for advocacy.
Replication and scaling up interventions
- Undertake demonstrative interventions to create access, retention and performance of girls in education
- Undertake interventions to demonstrate what works for girls’ education. This will involve project planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation
- Disseminating and documenting FAWE-SS’ and other girls’ best practices in education to other partners
- Carry out policy dialogues to influence the replication and mainstreaming of the best practices into the national education system
Community Advocacy
- Lobby and advocate on policy matters at national and community level in order to sensitize the community and policy makers on girls’ education
- Participate in the roll out and formation of PAGE groups as one of the strategies for increasing enrolment and retention of girls in school
- Participate in the recruitment of FAWE-SS members and ensure their active involvement and participation in the chapter activities
- Convene statutory meetings on behalf on the National Coordinator incase of her absence
National chapter capacity building
- Work closely with the National Coordinator and Finance Assistant in reviewing administrative, human resources and financial systems and policies
- Assist in coordinating the preparation of the annual project budget and monitor project activities
- Manage human resources and personnel issues
- Plan and administer capacity building activities such as training and supervising finance and administrative staff in procedures for finance, procurement, logistics management and other administrative systems
- Provide technical assistance as needed in the areas of education finance, performance management and accountability
Monitoring and Evaluation
- Oversee the financial and administrative operations of the program and report directly to National Coordinator
- Prepare monthly report for the National Coordinator on schedule
- Assist National Coordinator with preparation of quarterly and annual reports
- Assist in the monitoring and evaluation of the implementation of FAWE-SS strategic plan and work programs and re-planning accordingly
Resource mobilization
Mobilize and channel resources for FAWE-SS through proposal writing and manage donor relationship
Expected deliverables
- Monthly report submitted to the National Coordinator by 25th of every month
- FAWE-SS program status report updated monthly, quarterly and annually
- FAWE-SS briefing pack prepared and updated regularly
- Presentations, reports, feature stories and program summaries provided on schedule as requested by the National Coordinator/Executive Committee
Desired background and experience
- University degree in social sciences, preferably in education
- At least three years work experience in and education or gender related environment
- Ability to manage and motivate staff
- Excellent computer and writing and communication skills required, as well as fluency in English and cultural sensitivity towards diverse societies
- Background in donor relations and proposal development an asset
- Working experience in Southern Sudan an asset
- Drive, passion and commitment to gender issues
