IRC is seeking a qualified Sudanese national for following position:
Protection Monitoring Officer – Torit (With frequent travel throughout Eastern Equatoria State)The Protection Monitoring Officer will collect information regarding the protection concerns and needs of returnee and host populations by conducting village assessments, focus group discussions and individual interviews.
Specific Duties:
- Participate in frequent field monitoring visits to assess the protective environment in areas with high rates of return
- Participate in rapid assessments of displaced populations to determine protection concerns and appropriate responses, including identifying barriers to return
- Participate in assessments of places of origin for displaced populations and relay important information back to populations of concern
- Conduct individual interviews with returnees and IDPs, interviews with local leaders, and focus group discussions, respecting the principles of confidentiality
- Record data collected in the field and type field notes/transcripts in a timely manner
- Participate in the analysis of data collected and the writing of focus group discussion findings, Village Assessment Forms, Return Monitoring Snapshots and other relevant documents
- When possible, participate in inter-agency assessment missions to areas of return and displacement
- Conduct follow up missions to Community Protection Committees to build their capacity around protection monitoring and reporting, as well as increase their linkages with other protection actors
Additional Requirements:
- Higher Diploma or Degree in Social Sciences, preferably in Law
- At least 2 years NGO/UN protection monitoring/human rights experience
- Previous report writing experience in the English language
- Responsive to deadlines assigned by supervisor
- Commitment to human rights and protection principles
- Able to work in a variety of environments and is prepared to be in the field a majority of the work week
- Willing to conduct field missions, often over night, to remote locations with few amenities
- Works collaboratively with team members to achieve results
- Excellent communication skills
- Good computer skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, and Internet
- Familiarity with customary laws, judiciary systems and legal developments and issues in Southern Sudan
- Fluency in English & Arabic and knowledge of at least one Equatorian language (preferably Acholi or Madi) required
